My Life After College For The Public School Lunch System

A Journey to Discovering My Path in Life When I graduated from college in spring 2015 with my Bachelor in Nutrition, I thought I knew exactly how my life after college was going to be like. My mission is to create a change to the public school lunch system; to help children learn how to love and enjoy a healthy and nutritious meal. It was discouraging to find out that there is a lot of limitations to what changes I can make; however, I did not want to waste my time doing nothing as I soul search my new goal in life. That is when a job listing for AmeriCorps VISTA came across me as I was searching for jobs that might interest me. There were many different fields and opportunities out there that VISTA can get involve with, but I choose Communities In Schools of the Heart of Texas (CIS-HOT) as the site I want to serve because it offers me a change of environment and it support my values; children are our future so we need to invest in them. Starting out my service year in August 2015, I did not know what national service was all about or what Communities In Schools (CIS) does either. I accepted the position as the Volunteer Coordinator base on my experiences with volunteering while I was still in school and my believe and desire that I can make a difference. The force that pushes me to take on this challenge was my passion to see children succeed and the feeling of accomplishment that I can help make that change possible.
